Alternative Breaks | Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the 2020 UC San Diego Alternative Break trips being canceled?

The health and safety of our students is a top priority, and the rapid evolution of the COVID-19 virus, along with new cases domestically and abroad, are the basis for decisions to postpone travel. This decision arrived at the recommendation of UC San Diego Risk Management.

I’ve already made payments for my 2020 UC San Diego Alternative Breaks trip prior to the trip cancellations. Will I be refunded?

Yes, all students will be refunded the amount they have already paid for the 2020 UC San Diego Alternative Breaks trip via their student account by April 1, 2020.

Will I have an opportunity to be a part of Alternative Breaks next year?

YES! UC San Diego Alternative Breaks hopes to offer trips next year and any student who was on a canceled trip during the 2019-2020 school year will receive priority acceptance to the trips during the 2020-2021 school year. To express interest and receive priority acceptance to a UC San Diego Alternative Breaks trip next year, please complete this form.

Please note that priority acceptance is only valid for a future trip with a similar social justice issue focus. Students who are graduating in 2020 will receive priority in being selected as the Community Advisor for the trip (please note that there is only 1 Community Advisor position per trip)

I was a UC San Diego Alternative Breaks Scholarship recipient. What happens now?

Since none of the 2020 UC San Diego Alternative Breaks trips will be proceeding, all scholarships will be returned to the AB Scholarship fund. UC San Diego Financial Aid will be performing this action for you. You may see the amount of the scholarship appear on your student account and then another line with the same amount subtracted. For example:
  • Alternative Breaks Scholarship +500
  • Alternative Breaks Scholarship -500

My trip was canceled, but I still want to spend time with my group and volunteer with the social justice issue. What can I do?

Who can I reach out to if I have further questions?

Please email UC San Diego Alternative Breaks advisor Emily Loui at with any additional questions or concerns.
